FX Renews 'The League' for Fourth Season
Hire Chelsea Clinton as on-air talent, and watch the pundits pounce.our editor recommendsChelsea Clinton Makes Debut as NBC News Correspondent (Video)NBC News President Defends Hiring Chelsea Clinton The First Daughter-turned-journalist, 31, made her first cameo Monday night on Rock Center With Brian Williams, presenting a 'Making a Difference" segment about Annette Dove, who runs an after-school program for impoverished children in Arkansas. In a tepid yet diplomatic review, NY Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley observed: "Ms. Clinton is a little self-conscious on camera and doesn't have the kind of richly modulated anchor voice most television reporters acquire, but that actually gave her piece a more natural feel -- like a video blog on Current TV." PHOTOS: 10 Entertainers Democrats and Republicans Love to Hate "She did just fine," said Vulture's Noreen Malone. "No flubs, no ill-advised tangents -- though when Clinton addressed Dove with 'Yes, ma'am,' it wasn't the most natural-seeming thing in the world, despite her Southern roots." Meanwhile, other pundits were more brutal. Take, for example, this review by the Washington Post's Hank Stuever: "It's no surprise whatsoever that Chelsea Clinton didn't electrify broadcast journalism with her debut Monday night on NBC's Rock Center With Brian Williams, because she has no experience in broadcast journalism. ... Rather, what was surprising to see on Monday night's show is how someone can be on TV in such a prominent way and, in her big moment, display so very little charisma - none at all. Either we're spoiled by TV's unlimited population of giant personalities or this woman is one of the most boring people of her era." In the opinion of Newsday's Verne Gay, Clinton "seems like a very nice young woman" who's "obviously bright." But "there was nothing else that necessarily dismissed charges (mostly by TV critics, although they were not alone) that she got this job because of that name," Gay wrote. "Her voice -- the first time most of us have even heard it -- was pleasing and plummy, but monochromatic; in the obligatory crosstalk with Williams following her report on Arkansas social worker Annette Dove, she exhibited the spontaneity of any TV rookie." ORY: Media Analyst Slams NBC News for Hiring 'Impostor' Chelsea Clinton Clinton, who gives off an air of professionalism and poise, might have to loosen up a bit in order to win over critics. "Chelsea doesn't 'pop' off the screen, to use an industry term -- her demeanor is reserved, she doesn't project her voice like a broadcaster. Not that most viewers probably care," said Howard Kurtz of The Daily Beast. "Her best moments were in the subsquent conversation with Williams. Though slightly nervous, she seemed sincere, and her careful cadence, empathetic gaze, and beaming smile were instantly reminiscent of Hillary." How Electronic Music Moved The General Public this season
If 1991 was the season punk broke, 2011 was the season club music crept to the heart of America.our editor recommendsDJ Magazine Reveals Its Annual Best Gamers DJs List in AmsterdamElectric Daisy Circus Returns to Las vegas, Sets DatesLive Nation Canada Launches Electro Music Division In the trend that was born inside the EU and Scandinavia and contains been building stateside for your better part of 10 years, the floodgates broke this year with everyone from Beyonce to Britney Warrior warrior spears riding the coattails of Euro-styled synth hooks up charts. In-demand DJs are really pocketing around $200,000 a show and selling out multiple nights in urban centers from NY to La. Possibly the most effective instance of the electronic revolution? Insomniac Events' Electric Daisy Circus, a dance festival that has attracted 100s of thousands of revelers to stadium-style venues for any very long time. It made national mind lines this season each time a 15-year-old girl died from the ecstasy overdose following a concert in La. Ever since then, attendance has skyrocketed, reaching 230,000 when the event gone after Las vegas this year - and injected some $136 million to the Clark County economy, according to one study. Hunting YouTube, Twitter as well as the club scene for future headliners are companies for instance William Morris Endeavor, early adopters in the dance trend who opened up up up an electronic music department in 2008 that now boasts greater than 150 functions. Others adopted suit: APA recently produced an electronic music division, as has Live Nation inside the U.S. and Canada (both launched this year). STORY: Electric Daisy Circus Starts: Is Las vegas Becoming America's Reaction to Ibiza? "It's exciting to find out it crossing over," states Insomniac leader and Boss Pasquale Rotella. "It's something I imagined of 2 decades ago." What Rotella might haven't imagined, however, is just how big the EDM (electronic dance music) movement would become. Because the genre doesn't still still outsell stylish-hop in recorded music, it really works well on iTunes worldwide and contains surpassed rap inside the live arena. Once word progressively misled out that Rotella and corporations for instance Holland's ID&T (which does similar occasions in Europe) were making millions via house music-centric occasions that mimic old-fashioned "raves" with top-tier DJ talent and experiential lighting elements, the mold was set a few years back that is becoming large business. But it is not only festivals any more where actual money continues to be created within the live electronic music market.DJ-producer Deadmau5 recently offered out six consecutive nights at NY's Roseland Ballroom, eclipsing the venue's previous record holder Rage In the Machine in the symbolic passing in the torch from rock to support music for teens and twentysomethings. STORY: 'Electric Daisy' Film Premiere and Riot: A View Right in front Line Captured within the hometown of Toronto, Deadmau5 carried out to greater than 20,000 at Rogers Center, a venue usually limited to names for instance U2. Tiesto, who's ranked among the top-grossing live functions in the world, recently headlined the home Depot Center (capacity: 27,000) in Carson, California (a year ago, the Nederlander trance titan needed in nearly $900,000 in one three-evening stand at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium). To check on, Taylor Quick can pull in similar-sized crowds, but handful of others compare. Live Nation, still smarting in the weak 2010, wants informed. Rotella states Insomniac remains "in talks" while using live occasions giant regarding a possible partnership, nevertheless the original West Coast player might not need them. Inside the future, Insomniac, which already introduced returning to Las vegas due to its crown jewel summer season blowout (presales are actually strong) is predicted to soon announce a massive development of the electrical Daisy Circus concept, with 2012 stops planned for your highly populated Colonial corridor and South usa, whilst not all will probably be EDC-high quality. "We're doing 16 festivals in 2012," he mentioned. "Some are locked lower and several have become there."Being apparent, its not all the occasions will probably be EDC-high quality. Only five will carry the EDC title, yet the fact Rotella is getting into lots of new areas, some worldwide, shows the potency of the dance music sector, during a still-residual recession. VIDEO: David Guetta's 'Nothing Nevertheless the Beat' Lands in Hollywood Still, no matter the development, Rotella states it's all about going where the demand is: EDC in Colorado will not occur in 2012 because it's got yesteryear few years.InchWe're able to not gross enough [there] to assist people anticipation," he mentioned, watching that already the mile high market was buying tickets for the bigger annual Las vegas edition of EDC in substantial amounts. If the involves DJ-based electronic music encounters in the live setting, large-scale occasions, whether it's 20,000-chair arenas or 70,000-capacity arenas, are progressively where the movement is heading, simply because the overhead is actually reduced -- a DJ needs simply a laptop, rather than a pop star like Rhianna requiring a few dozen trucks' cost of production and gear (despite the fact that some DJs, for instance Swedish House Mafia and Kaskade, are buying and selling in increasingly more complex lighting rigs). Dance functions, which are mostly vocals-free, also don't rely on radio play and aren't restricted having a marketing calendar. Fans are devotional with techniques the big music labels are simply recently starting to know. Take, for example, Miami's three-day Ultra Music Festival, which a year ago featured greater than 130 functions. It's already at seventy percent capacity in presales, say entrepreneurs, who haven't even revealed the talent selection yet."A year ago, we offered out six days prior [for the event]," states Russell Faibisch, co-founding father from the fest, which launched in 1999. "This year, we offered 100,000 tickets within the first week, which we've not even introduced one artist yet." Ultra's website crashed briefly after greater than millions of page sights put the squeeze on its servers as fans clicked on up early-bird tickets. "We could look at this trend getting good effective because when fast we now have accomplished certain key occasions," UMF's Director of economic matters, Adam Russakoff, added. This without on the news release or single ad removed...everything UMF planners needed to complete was send an e-mail blast and publish around the Facebook page. Around 165,000 are needed in 2012 striking the springbreak-like dance music festival over 72 hrs in March. STORY:Electric Daisy Carnival's Tainted Past But it is not only festivals getting in fans inside a record clip.Less reported in comparison to hundreds of 1000's that get to annual blowouts for instance Ultra and EDC will be the numerous mid-sized shows at venues which typically host bands that occur from Atlanta to Chicago by DJs most Us citizens haven't learned about. Bassnectar offered 21,000 tickets over two nights at Verizon Wireless Carrier Company at Encore Park in Atlanta lately in the co-headline with Pretty Lights. Avicii has offered around 9000 tickets up to now with an 11/18 gig in Washington D.C. Swedish House Mafia offered out their forthcoming December Madison Square Garden engagement within 10 mins within a September pre-purchase (around 15,000 will attend the offered out show). On November. 26, entrepreneurs in Washington D.C expect around 15,000 at RFK stadium with an event featuring France's Martin Solveig (who recently cracked the U.S. pop charts along with his "Hello," which peaked at No. 19 round the Billboard Hot 100), Moby, Armand Van Helden while others simply referred to as "Fall Massive." In La, one venue co-owner refurbished his entire club to greater serve dance music fans furthermore for the Music Box's busy weekly schedule serving rock fans at traditional live gigs, which sell reduced and so are less lucrative (no Private room "table service" within an indie rock concert)."It's amazing what's happening,Inch states Kobi Danan of Hollywood's Music Box."As soon as we put the tickets on buy for a couple of of those [electronic] artists they provide out...we don't event have to spend anything advertising or marketing on functions like Nero," he mentioned, adding he is doing "eight occasions the companyInch within the bar around the dance music evening versus a typical rock or rap gig where fans leave as soon as the show is finished. In line with the co-owner and talent booker, it was not similar to this just couple of years ago.In individuals days, he "paid out just a little fracture" from the kind of guarantees The Music Activity Box be forced to pay out now to land a hot title for instance Afrojack, the club recently did."It was not as popular since it is now," according to him of electronic music."The demand in this companies are excessive it's almost difficult to keep tickets [available]." An increasing trend within the last few years is bigger DJs who is able to sell thousands of tickets at arena shows doing high-ticket-cost one offs at clubs such as the Music Box and Playhouse in Hollywood ($100 per ticket entry) or multiple evening stands at mid-sized venues, as Tiesto did at his three-evening stand it the Shrine Auditorium. As 2012 approaches, it is not only large names like Tiesto who you will need to perform the kind of amounts the Dutchman did this season and 2011, either. "What's interesting to us happens when quickly that is overflowing," states Huston Powell, an Austin-based promoter at C3 Presents, which produces the progressively dance-heavy Lollapalooza yearly. Adds WME agent Joel Zimmerman, who aided develop this years Identity Festival, a summer season tour featuring numerous dance music's ascendant names, and whose agency signifies such functions as Axwell, Calvin Harris and Kaskade: "The quantity of large DJs growing that could do this kind of business now's substantial. It's striking large amount of differing people.Inch WME isn't the main agency in L.A. making moves in electronic music circles."Carrying out a vibrant undercover following for several years, electronic music is becoming seen just like a legitimate talent," states Josh Humiston, partner and co-mind of concerts at APA. "We still give consideration to growing this division," mentioned the agent, who recently showed up Paul Oakenfold just like a client for your agency's growing department. Powell has seen growth and development of another kind at their very own company within the this past year, while he and co-employees found themselves shocked within the explosive sales inside the Area in a couple of of the EDM shows."We started to find out every one of these DJs produce a following inside the Chicago area and then we reserved Deadmau5 show within the Congress Theater a year ago,Inch Powell mentioned. The response am great they immediately guaranteed the DJ-producer for several 2011 shows inside the Windy City."We did 21,000 tickets in three plays over five several days in Chicago," he ongoing."We are in a position to did more." Just what does the promoter attribute the large ticket sales, surprising to nearly all industry audiences?Social media, simply."They have this open dialog utilizing their fans, greater than rock bands," he mentioned of DJs that boast formidable Facebook fans. "They just tell their people they're coming as well as the fans come." With new hotly expected artists from France's Madeon to Sweden's Dada Existence growing this winter, get ready for a lot more DJs to create audiences set to surprise entrepreneurs, fans along with the entertainers themselves in 2012."There's an entire wave coming," mentioned Powell. Wreckers
A Man-made Eye presentation of the Likely Story production. (Worldwide sales: Content Film, London.) Created by Simon Onwurah. Directed, compiled by D.R. Hood. With: Claire Foy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rob Evans, Peter McDonald, Sinead Matthews, Nicola Eco-friendly, June Watson, Georgie Cruz.If films have trained us anything, it's the likelihood of lasting happiness are stacked against urban yuppies seeking peace within the countryside, so it is once again in "Wreckers." Playing like critics' darling "Martha Marcy May Marlene" using the genders turned and also the weather gloomier, author-helmer D.R. Hood's intriguing, well-behaved debut draws shifting lines of conflict between its clean-scrubbed central couple and also the black-sheep brother who invades their bucolic bliss, before losing steam within the third act. Chilly pic reps a troublesome sell even going to home auds, although rising star Benedict Cumberbatch might lure some. Per press notes, Hood states have become up within an British village like the sleepy Fens hamlet portrayed here, and her film is clearly posited like a contempo undertake a great British tradition of rustic what-lies-beneath storytelling, dating back radio cleaning soap "The Archers" and beyond. You will find tonal parallels here with Ali Smith's 2005 novel "The Accidental," because the pic mistrustfully regards city-dwellers' community-minded affectations such conditions. The narrative wastes very little time creating the fragile marital setup of on the face still-smitten Beginning (Claire Foy) and David (Cumberbatch), who've lately moved to David's grey childhood village to begin their loved ones -- a project that the early scene inside a fertility clinic determines continues to be battling to achieve fruition for a while. The move, meanwhile, seems to profit workaholic academic David a lot more than it will schoolteacher Beginning, who's frequently left alone to handle challenges of remodeling their falling apart country pad. When David's scruffier brother Nick (Rob Evans), a soldier on leave from Afghanistan, appears surprise on their own doorstep, it does not initially appear odd that Beginning is more happy for his company than her husband is. It isn't lengthy, however, prior to the seriously Post traumatic stress disorder-stricken Nick starts dredging up uncomfortable family reminiscences that suggest the David whom Nick was raised with is quite different from the guy Beginning married. The behaviour of three principals requires a funny turn, with techniques that feel alternately unsettling and unnaturally script-caused. If Hood progressively expires of the way to bend this brittle character triangular -- Nick's arc is unsatisfyingly limited because the script changes focus to lesser causes in Beginning and David's marriage -- she warrants credit for building and looking after the film's remarkably moldy mood, too for drawing a trio of wise, splintery performances from her vibrant youthful leads. Evans is especially impressive inside a tight, nervy turn resistant to the role's possibility of wild-eyed showboating. Effectively edited production helps make the the majority of clearly limited assets (we never see the outside of the couple's house, to begin with). Annemarie Lean-Vercoe's intelligent lensing is seasonally evocative, which would be to say mostly overcast, while Andrew Lovett's score, using its unpredicted inflections of fiddle and accordion, strikes an ironically pastoral note.Camera (color, 16mm-to-35mm), Annemarie Lean-Vercoe editor, Claire Pringle music, Andrew Lovett production designer, Beck Rainford costume designer, Rebecca Gore seem, Ben Collinson. Christophe Beck's eco-friendly phase
Christophe BeckBeck's obtained 'The Muppets.''Tower Heist' was created as 'the essential NY heist movie.'The broad comedy 'Date Night' demonstrates Beck's range.'Waiting for Superman' was Beck's first doc like a composer. Director Brett Ratner was searching for a brand new composer for his approaching action comedy "Tower Heist." Universal executives suggested Montreal-born Christophe Beck, the composer of these high-grossing comedies as "The Hangover" and "Date Evening."Ratner visited Beck at his Santa Monica studio and was stunned at the amount of movie posters around the walls. "The man looked more youthful than me, and I am like, 'You've done each one of these movies?' " Ratner made the decision to audition Beck: If he could develop a primary theme, the task was his."I needed so that it is the essential NY heist movie, a la 'Taking of Pelham One Two Three' or 'The Hot Rock,' " Ratner states. "I needed to make certain it had been urban it's Eddie Murphy and Gabourey Sidibe. And in the first bass line, I am suggesting, he knocked it from the park. He managed to get '70s without sounding dated. It is a huge score, but it is awesome, sophisticated, emotional, it's a lot color. It's among the best scores I have ever endured.InchBeck, 42, has obtained a lot more than 70 movies previously fifteen years. Even though the majority of his large hits happen to be comedies -- from "Cheaper through the Dozen" to "Garfield: The FilmInch -- the labeling could be deceitful. Comedy points are no more about while using trombone to create laughing noises."Comedies are, In my opinion, harder than other sorts of movies due to there being much more of an anything-goes feeling concerning the music," states Beck. "Lots of occasions you are playing it entirely straight. A part of your work like a comedy composer is exploring each one of these different genres for comedy effect, however the music is dead serious."He cites a scene in "I Really Like You, Janet Cooper," by which he performed a towel fight with swashbuckling sailing-adventure music that wouldn't be unnatural within an Errol Flynn film. "Date Evening," another example, has just as much suspense and action material since many thriller scores.Shawn Levy, who directed "Date Evening" (and four other films with Beck), states the composer's scores "vary wildly from awesome to poignant to regal. Younger crowd includes a critical skill for any film composer: He listens. He listens to exactly what the filmmaker is looking to get across and that he translates individuals intentions into musical notes."Beck's flexibility might be the effect of a musical background which includes from rock to opera: He began playing piano at 3, carried out inside a band in the teens, authored an opera at Yale and -- although he considered publish-grad operate in musical theater -- ended up within the USC film-scoring enter in 1992."It was something I possibly could be a master at,Inch Beck recalls thinking. "It had been a very fantastic way to make music with others. I did not suffer from stage fright, writing lyrics or determining generate an income desired to look. It had been a pleasant, behind-the-moments music job, also it suited me perfectly."He arrived his first series (the Canadian-created "Whitened Fang") as they was still being at USC, interned for any year with TV legend Mike Publish and did several American series ("Two," "F/X," "George & Leo") until landing his breakthrough show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."It had been after giving up TV in 2001 that things began happening for Beck around the feature side. "Underneath the Tuscan Sun" director Audrey Wells, who calls his storytelling abilities "transcendent," recalls their 100-piece orchestra giving him a five-minute standing ovation in the finish from the periods.Todd Phillips hired Beck for "School for Scoundrels" in 2006 and states he has not sought out another composer since, including "DeadlineInch and 2 "Hangover" movies. "We start speaking about tone and styles in prep, so he's already writing music when we're shooting, that is great because we rarely need to use temp tracks."As crazy because it sounds, with my comedies we're going for reality," states Phillips. "The situations might be absurd, however the figures and everyone around you that they reside in must always feel just as real as you possibly can. Christophe's music always takes that into account. He goodies our comedies as stylishly because he would treat any drama."Even though Beck does not think about themself as especially political, when documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim requested him gain his Obama short films just before the 2008 election, Beck required the task. Guggenheim then requested him gain "Awaiting Superman," the broadly acclaimed doc concerning the failures from the American educational system."It had such a variety of tone," Guggenheim states, "his stuff was brilliant, it labored perfectly. His music is gorgeous, beautiful, also it makes me cry."Additionally to "Tower Heist," Beck lately finished "The Muppets" and it is now at the office on the Micrograms movie ("What This Means Is War") and also the Disney toon feature "Paperman," "a composer's dream," he states, because the artists are actually illustrating to his music.States Ratner: "He's a celebrity."BILLION-DOLLAR COMPOSER: CHRISTOPHE BECK Beck's eco-friendly phase Resurrecting 'Muppets' in Disney tradition Beginning from the undead Beck's music in the own words Beck, private school grad, gives back Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

What to Expect From Brian Williams' 'Rock Center'
This story first appeared in the Oct. 21 issue of The Hollywood Reporter.our editor recommendsBrian Williams' Newsmagazine to Be Called 'Rock Center'Brian Williams Talks Politics, Occupy Wall Street on 'Late Show' (Video)Brian Williams' NBC Nightly News Causes Brawl In May, when NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt spoke about the network's new newsmagazine led by Brian Williams -- the Nightly News anchor, wry talk show visitor and repeat guest star on Tina Fey's 30 Rock -- he hinted that Williams' comedic side would be part of the show. But when Rock Center premieres Oct. 31 in the 10 p.m. Monday slot vacated by quickly canceled drama The Playboy Club, executive producer Rome Hartman cautions that Williams will not be channeling Jon Stewart. "Brian has a very good wit and a sense of humor," Hartman tells THR, "but this is not a comedy show." PHOTOS: The Most Talked-About TV News Faces Rock Center will cover news and human-interest stories while avoiding sister show Dateline's true crime genre. NBC News personnel including medical editor Nancy Snyderman and chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel will contribute as their schedules allow, but Kate Snow and Harry Smith will get top billing alongside Williams. (Former Today co-host Meredith Vieira will not appear on the show during the first couple of months because of previous commitments.) NBC News has built a set that insiders describe as a posh man cave with a view of the Manhattan skyline and multiple anchor stations -- including one with a sofa. Rock Centeris the first broadcast newsmagazine launch in recent memory and long past the heyday of the format when such programs made news with major "gets" and commanded prime primetime real estate from network entertainment divisions. These days, most regularly scheduled newsmagazines are shunted to weekend hours and many of them are used to fill holes in the schedule. PHOTOS:10 TV Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club' But Hartman notes that Rock Center has received a "tremendous commitment" from network executives."From [NBC Universal CEO] Steve Burke to [NBC News president] Steve Capus to Brian Williams and on down, there is a commitment that this program is going to be given every opportunity to succeed." Certainly the price tag for Rock Center is significantly less than a scripted hour; newsmagazines typically cost $250,000 to $300,000 to produce (not including anchor salaries), compared to $3 million per episode for a drama series. But there are no plans to expand Rock Center to plug additional future programming holes or use it as a money-saving gambit similar to the network's aborted 10 p.m. Jay Leno experiment. "One night a week is plenty for us right now," says Hartman. "We neither want to be considered filler nor do we have any plans for world domination." REVIEW: Tepid But Harmless Dirty Girl Makes Special Plea for '80s Teen Misfits
Every era has its misfits, people who feel out of step with their contemporaries and the world. As a plea for tolerance and understanding of oddballs, Dirty Girl, the debut feature from writer-director Abe Sylvia, hits every note so squarely on the beat that in the end, it’s nothing but square. It doesn’t matter that Sylvia has stocked the soundtrack with killer ’80s pop from the likes of Bow Wow Wow, Teena Marie and Joan Jett. The movie’s true poster girl is the drippy Melissa Manchester, urging us to sing from our souls, because she thinks we can make it. In Dirty Girl, Juno Temple plays ’80s misfit Danielle, a hot-pants heartbreaker who has earned, to paraphrase Jett, a bad reputation around her school. Not that she cares. Trapped in Oklahoma, the daughter of a single mom (played by Milla Jovovich) who’s about to make the mistake of marrying a Mormon (William H. Macy), Danielle gets a kick out of acting out. But deep down, what she really wants to do is find her absentee father, a man she’s never met. She reluctantly befriends the class loser, the stocky, awkward, hoodie-wearing Clarke (Jeremy Dozier), whose own parents (Dwight Yoakam and Mary Steenburgen) are on the verge of disowning him because they suspect — rightly — that he might be gay. The two take off on a cross-country jaunt in search of Danielle’s dad, and not long after, their worried-frantic moms team up and head out to find them. Dirty Girl is harmless enough, and the early scenes, in which Danielle surveys poor Clarke with snobbish contempt, have a pleasing nastiness. The two have been thrown into a “special” class, where they’re charged with pairing off to care for flour sacks that are supposed to represent babies. While their fellow students decorate their little charges with gaudy eyelashes and drawn-on lips, giving them de facto personalities, Clarke and Danielle carelessly drop theirs on the floor. But before long, they’re expressing their otherwise unexpressable feelings through that fake baby — it draws them together, exactly as it’s intended to do. Still, nearly every element of Dirty Girl is so broad and exaggerated that the picture just becomes wearying. The adult characters — particularly Yoakam’s disapproving dad — are intentionally oversized, but they just come off as shrill and cardboardy. Dozier brings some sweetness to Clarke, but he doesn’t have enough presence to hold down his end of the picture. Temple, on the other hand, is an appealing young actress: She was wonderful as the loopy, seductive free spirit London in Gregg Araki’s end-of-the-world romp >Kaboom. She throws off some lovely energy here, particularly in a scene, late in the movie, that also features Tim McGraw in a small role. McGraw’s character is written, and played, as the movie’s most sympathetic adult presence, and he rises to the challenge beautifully. Though he’s best known as a country singer (and the husband of Faith Hill), he’s given some wonderful, understated performances in pictures like The Blind Side and Country Strong, and when he showed up in Dirty Girl, I sighed with relief: At last, a real human being! His scene with Temple is gentle, lyrical and believable, and it gives Dirty Girl some much-needed ballast and heart. But mostly, the picture ladles out the Melissa Manchester empowerment message way too heavily. It’s enough to want to make you cry out loud.

Black Swan Interns Seeking Class-Action Lawsuit to Curb Exploitation of Unpaid Labor
“The only thing I learned on this internship was to be more picky in choosing employment opportunities… Black Swan had more than $300 million in revenues. If they paid us, it wouldn’t make a big difference to them, but it would make a huge difference to us.” Recent college grad Alex Footman didn’t pick up many useful lessons during his time making coffee on the set of the Darren Aronofsky Oscar pic, but he and a fellow intern are attempting to change how Hollywood exploits labor does business. Good luck to the little guys? [NYT via MovieCityNews]
Fashion Slam: The Style Fruits Of My Labor
By Ryan PattersonLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- How cute are due to the fact? This really is my daughter putting on the Missoni for Target rain boots I acquired her. I, like many, many, lots of people was going insane trying to purchase the stuff once the site crashed. You may recall from these blog, concerning the debut from the Missoni collection, that my hubby remained up through the night trying that helped me to use the internet therefore we both hit the shops only to discover mostly empty shelves. I now owe him a racing weekend, but so what can I only say? The man went past the cod! I had been finally in a position to cope with and order a couple of things, that have been trickling in. The first one to arrive were due to the fact and my daughter absolutely LOVES them. Despite the fact that it does not really rain here- shes recently been putting on them every single day. Sometimes whenever you use the internet and dont see the merchandise first, you do not understand what the standard is going to be like. Weve all had the experience, right? Well, I had been amazed through the Missoni line. The metallic Spacedye spend and matching cardigan I purchased personally came in plus they are quite nice. Sometimes rayon and polyester could be tickly, but this fabric does not look or feel cheap. The silk print scarf I acquired looks much more costly compared to $19.99 it cost! All the clothing we've got for the daughter is beyond adorable and can endure well at preschool- the best test! The only real bummer is the fact that while attempting to order on that crazy day once the site crashed, I purchased the incorrect sweater, and so i didnt obtain the one factor which i wanted personally. Well i guess, theres always eBay. Overall, I figured it was most likely the very best designer collaboration Target has been doing and thats from somebody who has purchased from virtually every collection. Social TV: 5 Methods of Showrunners to interact Their Audience
Sons of Anarchy Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter lately introduced he'd be flying a couple of his blog and Twitter fans to L.A. to look at a chapter from the show at his house. It's extreme, without a doubt, but it is also an ideal illustration of an unconventional method for showrunners to interact with fans. Below, Kendall Aliment of ID-PR indicates five creative methods of showrunners to have interaction with audiences, and maximize their exposure along the way. 1. Keep in touch all week lengthy. Remember: Your show is just on for (at most) 42 minutes per week, but fans have to be attached to your articles throughout all of the days between. Request yourself, "So what can I provide them with that will have them engrossed within the figures and thinking about tuning in each and every week?" Fall Preview: Get scoop in your favorite coming back shows 2. Put casting and inventive elements in to the community's hands. For instance, if you are searching for a brand new artwork to hold inside a character's bed room on set, publish a proactive approach and also have people submit their work.Showrunners come with an amazing chance to crowdsource, since they are those who reach dictate what is going to be around the air. 3.Let the entire crew to sign up. Sometimes it is the authors, company directors and producers which have probably the most interesting information to talk about, because they are those creating the tales. We have seen on Twitter that a few of the funniest, most entertaining voices on the show (and also the most adopted accounts) would be the people behind the curtain. Try live-tweeting a chapter in the writers' room or even the director's chair. These folks give a completely different perspective and may give fun experience about, say, which jokes were cut and why, alternate being and teaser games into what we should might expect in next week's episode. From Urkel to Sheldon: Take a look at the most popular TV brainiacs 4.Don't wish to tweet instantly? Not a problem! Among the large concerns we have seen from showrunners is they do not want anybody to publish from looking for anxiety about offering story lines, new figures, high cliff-wardrobe hangers etc. It's obvious. In these instances, we encourage talent and crew people to capture a lot of photos and videos on set after which be discretionary when uploading. Ask them to publish something that is not "sensitive," for example photos of testing or of castmates in hair and makeup or chilling out between takes. Then request these phones catalog everything that could be considered a "spoiler" before week that specific show airs. It will help to construct buzz around a particular episode. Photo timeline: The emasculation of males on television 5. Think about methods to achieve new audiences. This past year, No Regular Family hired Shaycarl, an enormous YouTube personality from Maker Galleries, to guest-star with an episode. Throughout filming, and just before the show airing, he published YouTube videos about this, and marketed everything over his Twitter and facebook. His whole community - a lot more than a million customers - were motivated to stay tuned and offer the show, with no Regular Family saw an enormous spike in rankings that week they could only attribute to his guest appearance. Then when you are casting, think outdoors this area - don't go for an additional actor. Choose somebody who has a powerful, encouraging network. It's a method to deliver your show to another audience. Kendall Aliment creates digital Strategy team at ID-PR, an electronic, entertainment and brand communications agency.

2 Budding Stars Go for Broke on '2 Broke Girls'
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. (AP) The gals who play the 2 broke girls are cracking each other up.As their interview takes place in late July, Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings can count a grand total of one week spent working together. That was when they filmed the pilot for "2 Broke Girls" and that was in April. But joining a reporter for breakfast at Mel's Drive-in, a Valley landmark, they share laughs and a chemistry that seems years in the making just as they do on their sassy new comedy as struggling waitresses at a Brooklyn greasy spoon. ("2 Broke Girls" premieres Monday at 9:30 p.m. EDT, before settling into its regular slot on Sept. 26 at 8:30 p.m., hammocked between the CBS hits "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men.")While waiting for production to resume in early August, they solidified their friendship.Kat: "We've been checking in with each other every few days."Beth: "I'll randomly text Kat about something I'm watching on TV in the middle of the night: 'You need to see this! ' "Kat: "Like, ' "Extreme Makeover" did WHAT?!' "No actorly exchanges about process or technique?"Oh, no!" Beth laughs. "We don't talk about work at all.""Should we?" poses Kat, her eyebrow raised.Orders are taken. Beth chooses an omelet and hash browns. Kat calls for wheat toast and, more urgently, a cup of joe."Nectar!" she rejoices when the coffee arrives. "And it's not bad.""I like diner coffee," Beth agrees as her cell phone sounds off."Oh, gee," she sighs after checking the number displayed. "This guy has been calling me all morning. I don't say my name on my message, so maybe he thinks I'm someone else. He keeps leaving these intense, long messages.""Let me do it, let me do it!" says Kat, eagerly snatching the phone and, in the guttural tone of a longshoreman, growling into it: "WHAT!!! Who IS this? WRONG number! NEVER call again!!!"They both dissolve into laughter."That makes me SO happy!" Kat giggles. On "2 Broke Girls," their characters will form a similar bond. But not instantly. First, they have to size each other up.Kat plays sarcastic, street-wise Max Black, who, to make ends meet, must work two jobs, one of which is the night shift at the downtrodden Williamsburg Diner.Beth plays chic Caroline Channing, whose ritzy Upper East Side lifestyle has abruptly come undone after her money-manager father got busted for financial shenanigans. Like Max, Caroline is now broke, too, and is seeking refuge at the diner waitressing alongside Max, who warily receives her not only as a co-worker but as a flat-mate, too.So not only is "2 Broke Girls" a buddy comedy, it's also a fish-out-of-water sitcom, with Caroline the Brooklyn-beached fish. The dialogue is snappy, befitting the show's topflight creative team: Michael Patrick King ("Sex and the City") and Whitney Cummings (TV's comedy "It" girl who is represented on the fall schedule by this show as well as her new starring sitcom, "Whitney," on NBC).But beyond its writing, the charm of "2 Broke Girls" comes down to its 2 leading ladies. In playing their roles, they both speak of trying to avoid stereotypes."Caroline is a girl who used to walk out of her NY high-rise with a car waiting and someone there to hand her a Starbucks," says Beth. "For me to play her, I had to find the entitlement without being a bitch.""Caroline's really sweet and innocent and adorable," Kat declares. "I think that's a fresh approach.""And she's smart," Beth adds. "She went to Wharton business school. I don't think Max would have taken to her if she weren't smart.""Max is more and more impressed with Caroline as she gets to know her," Kat agrees."And because Max takes a liking to Caroline, it shows she's more than a tough cookie," says Beth. Both actresses are 25 and hail from Pennsylvania. But there are distinct differences.Beth, whose credits include theater as well as the feature films "American Pie: Book of Love" and the upcoming indie comedy, "Serial Buddies," is a whippet-slender blonde with an unexpected past playing competitive soccer in school.Kat is a curvy brunette with smoldering eyes and alabaster skin. Her list of films includes "The 40-Year-old Virgin" and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," and, a decade ago, she played Bob Saget's teenage daughter on his short-lived TV comedy "Raising Dad."Despite the sexy Mutt-and-Jeff contrast they strike, the two women, curiously enough, stand about the same height."I'm 5-feet-5," Beth reports. "But the shoes make me 6 feet. Those beautiful Louboutins! But when I was wearing them it was really hard not to hang on to Kat, 'cause I'm really clumsy.""I'm just under 5-feet-4," Kat says. "But Beth and I are on such different scales: She's on a Barbie scale, and I'm on a G.I. Joe scale. MY head is like two times the size of HER head!""Your head doesn't look any bigger to me than my head," Beth insists.Kat was already signed for "2 Broke Girls" when she and Beth met last winter for what was the last step of Beth's audition process."My final test was to appear with this one," says Beth, gesturing toward Kat, who at the time was filming "Renee," an indie drama in which she stars as a teen who battles addiction and depression."She was so great!" Beth says. "She flew out from Florida where she was filming her movie for literally two hours, just for my audition, and then flew back.""But they had already sent me all your tapes," Kat recalls, "and I watched them and thought, 'Do they really NEED to test her? She's obviously the person. Just hire her!' ""Later that day," says Beth, "I got the call."Except then they had to wait to see if CBS would pick up the series."The more days that went by, the more doubts I had," Kat says. She was back in Los Angeles and at the wheel of her car when she got the good news from Whitney Cummings."She texted me," says Kat, "and I pulled over and cried because, I couldn't drive and cry.""I cried, too," Beth says. "I still had my baby-sitting job, and I was moving to a new apartment and was carrying a box when Whitney texted me. Then I texted Kat."And just like that, Kat and Beth were poised to be 2 breakout sitcom stars.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
